Post Bariatric Surgery

Post-bariatric surgery, also known as post-weight loss surgery, is a procedure aimed at reshaping and correcting the sagging skin that occurs in specific areas of the body due to significant weight loss. This surgery is performed on individuals who have been diagnosed with obesity, have exceeded certain body mass index proportions, and have not achieved success with diet attempts. Various techniques such as gastric balloon, banding, or gastric bypass are employed during bariatric surgery to induce rapid weight loss. However, rapid weight loss post-bariatric surgery often leads to skin laxity.

Post-bariatric surgery intervenes at this stage, addressing the areas of the body that have undergone deformation after weight loss. This includes procedures such as abdominoplasty, facial rejuvenation, thigh and arm lifts, breast reduction or lift, and buttock augmentation. Prior to the operation, thorough examination by specialist physicians is essential to assess any chronic illnesses or conditions that may hinder surgery.

The procedure for post-bariatric surgery varies depending on the intensity of the deformation, skin structure, and targeted area. For instance, breast lift procedures may involve both tissue reshaping and implant placement due to the loss of tissue volume. Abdominal skin laxity is addressed by excising excess skin and performing a tightening procedure. In some cases, buttock augmentation may require implant insertion to restore volume. Leg contouring may involve incisions hidden in the groin or bikini line to remove excess skin. Arm lifts often focus on eliminating sagging skin by excising excess tissue and repositioning the remaining skin.

Post-bariatric surgery is typically conducted under general anesthesia and may last approximately 4-6 hours depending on the extent of the deformity and techniques applied. Since multiple areas may require treatment, combined procedures are possible.

After surgery, common side effects include swelling, bruising, and fluid retention at the surgical site, which gradually subside over time. Patients are advised to rest for 2-3 weeks post-operation and refrain from intense physical activities for about a month. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection, and smoking cessation is recommended to facilitate healing. Pain management with prescribed analgesics is essential during the initial recovery period.

Post-bariatric surgery is suitable for individuals who have undergone bariatric surgery and subsequently experienced skin laxity resulting in deformities, provided they are in good overall health and over 18 years of age.
