BLEPHAROPLASTY (EYELID SURGERY)
Sagging in the eyelids and surrounding tissues over time due to factors such as aging, the effect of gravity, and genetic factors is a common occurrence. The eyelid, being both mobile and very thin-skinned in structure, inevitably experiences skin wrinkling over time. As the forehead descends downward with age, causing the eyebrows to drop onto the eyelids, eyelids without lifting power tend to sag downward. The eyelid skin is known as the thinnest skin structure in the body. Therefore, with each eye movement, wrinkles and sagging in the eyelid skin occur a little more. The wrinkles known as 'crow's feet' at the corners of the eyes are an example of this.
Eyelid surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids. It involves removing excess tissue along with sagging skin in the eyelid area and strengthening the membrane in front of the herniated fat tissue. With this operation, puffiness, bruising, and hollowing around the eyes are also corrected. Individuals experiencing eyelid drooping may need treatment not only for aesthetic reasons but also for problems such as narrowing of the field of vision. For eyelid surgery to be performed, it is important for the patient to be in good health, have no medical condition, and not have serious eye problems. The duration of the operation varies depending on the problem the patient needs to resolve and the technique most suitable for solving the problem and can take approximately 1-1.5 hours.
Eyelid Surgery Operation Process
Various techniques are used in eyelid surgery. First, the patient's eye and oculoplastic examinations need to be performed in detail, and the patient's eye and eyelid functions need to be evaluated. The technique to be applied may vary depending on the problem.
Lower eyelid surgery: Fat pads located on the cheekbones in young ages shift downwards due to aging and gravity over time. This condition leads to sagging and puffiness under the lower eyelid. Through a small incision made below the eyelashes, excess tissue is removed, and if there is fat tissue causing puffiness, it is distributed. If there is excess muscle and fat tissue, the excess tissue is removed. Thus, the correction of the sagging or puffiness under the eye is aimed.
Upper eyelid surgery: The fat and muscle tissues to be removed from the upper eyelid of the patient are determined by drawing before the operation. Generally, through a small incision made along a thin line to be hidden within the folding line of the eyelid, excess fat and muscle tissues are removed, thus achieving the desired sufficient tightness of the upper eyelid. Both lower and upper eyelid surgeries can be performed simultaneously. Local anesthesia may be preferred if only lower or upper eyelid surgery will be performed. However, if both procedures will be performed simultaneously, the choice of general anesthesia may enable the operation to proceed more smoothly for both the patient and the operating surgeon.
Who Can Undergo Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?
There is no age limit for eyelid surgery. It has been observed that some patients may need this surgery even in their twenties due to genetic factors.
Of course, if there is not a significant eyelid droop at an early age, this surgery is not recommended. Eyelid surgery is preferred by individuals over the age of 35, mainly due to factors other than genetic factors. This operation does not stop aging in the eyelids but maintains its effect for about 9-10 years. After the operation, the tired and dull facial expression of the person gives way to a lively and young expression.
