Gynecomastia

GYNCOMASTIA SURGERY (MALE BREAST REDUCTION)

The involuntary enlargement of the male breast area, resembling female breasts, is referred to as 'gynecomastia'. Abnormal breast enlargement in men, which commonly begins during adolescence but can also occur in infancy and old age, can lead to both physical and psychological problems if it becomes permanent. The causes of this condition in men are generally attributed to factors such as a disruption in the estrogen-androgen ratio, stress, obesity, trauma, medication use, environmental, and genetic factors. Often, no specific cause that could lead to gynecomastia is identified. Reduction of enlarged breasts in men, or male breast reduction surgery, is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic surgeries among men today. Breast enlargement in men can occur in one breast or both breasts simultaneously. Sometimes, one side may be more pronounced than the other. Positive and lasting results are achieved through this operation. The distressing appearance of the breast is eliminated, thus revealing a more aesthetic chest contour. Men who have experienced a loss of confidence due to breast enlargement feel much better and more confident after this operation.

What Are the Symptoms of Gynecomastia?
Symptoms observed in the breasts include:
- Swelling
- Pain or tenderness
- Sensitivity
- One breast being larger than the other.
- Both breasts being larger than normal.

These are the most prominent symptoms of gynecomastia.

How Is Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) Surgery Performed?
Gynecomastia surgery can be performed either surgically or through liposuction. Liposuction is generally preferred for mild to moderate sagging. However, if there is excess tissue beneath the nipple or if there is significant sagging, surgical methods are preferred. A 1-1.5 cm incision is made below the breast. Excess fat tissues are removed through the incision. In some cases of gynecomastia, there may be significant excess skin and the size of the breasts may be almost as large as female breasts. In such cases, open surgery may be necessary. The aim of this operation is to remove excess breast tissue to achieve a more normal and aesthetic appearance of the chest. This operation is the most effective and definitive method in the treatment of gynecomastia. The duration of the operation may vary depending on the condition of the breast and the technique to be applied, but it can take about 2 hours. It is performed under general anesthesia.

Recovery Process After Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) Surgery
The individual can be discharged on the same day as the operation. A chest corset is worn after the operation. The use of the corset is quite simple. It is recommended to wear the corset for approximately 4-6 weeks. In the initial days after the operation, pain, swelling, bruising, and edema may occur in the operation area. These usually begin to decrease after 3-4 days. It is recommended for the patient to sleep with elevated pillows for about 2 weeks after the operation. Heavy sports activities should be avoided for up to 6 weeks after the operation. Minimizing movement of the arms and shoulders is crucial for the individual's recovery process.

Is There an Age Limit for Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) Surgery?
Anyone who has reached the age of 18 and does not have any health problems can undergo this operation.

Is There Such a Thing as Pseudo-Gynecomastia? If So, How Can It Be Identified?
Pseudo-gynecomastia is a common and frequently encountered problem. It refers to the appearance of large breasts due to fat accumulation without actual glandular growth, typically associated with excessive weight and obesity.

Does Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) Surgery Leave Scars?
Depending on the method used during the operation, there may be slight scarring. This may vary depending on the individual's skin type and the technique applied.
