Breast Augmentation

BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY

As one of the most significant aspects of the female physique symbolizing femininity, breasts are considered a crucial part of aesthetics. For various reasons, some women may require breast augmentation surgery. Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure commonly sought by women due to issues such as unilateral or bilateral underdevelopment of breasts, breast asymmetry, loss of breast volume and sagging following pregnancy and breastfeeding, structural smallness, and asymmetry of the breasts.

The most commonly used and preferred method for breast augmentation surgery today is the use of silicone implants. While it is possible to use tissues such as the patient's own fat during breast augmentation surgery, the longevity of this method may not be as satisfying as silicone implants. During breast augmentation surgery, if there is any sagging and looseness present, simultaneous lifting of the breast tissue can also be performed. The selection of the appropriate silicone implant is determined based on the patient's condition and breast tissue by the guidance of the surgeon. The decision regarding breast size is made in collaboration with the surgeon and the patient, considering factors such as the patient's preference, existing breast size, skin elasticity, and proportions between the breasts.

How Breast Augmentation Surgery Is Performed: Silicone implants are inserted through a 4-5 cm incision made under the breast. Silicone implants can be placed under the breast tissue, beneath the muscle located in front of the chest wall, or through various other incision sites such as the areola, armpit, etc. After the implants are placed, aesthetic sutures are applied, and the incision is closed. There is no single type of silicone implant that is applied to every patient. The choice is made according to the quality of the implant and the patient's needs. The placement of the breast prosthesis is determined based on both the current condition of the breast and the patient's needs. The surgery is performed in an operating room under general anesthesia and typically takes approximately 1-2 hours.

Precautions Before Breast Augmentation Surgery: Usage of painkillers and blood thinners (such as aspirin, etc.) should be discontinued at least 8 days before the operation. Smoking should be stopped 2 weeks before the surgery as it may delay wound healing. Since there may be an increased tendency for bleeding during the menstrual period, it may be necessary to inform the surgeon about this issue even if not asked. Prior to the operation, the current condition of the breasts should be assessed through radiological examinations such as breast ultrasound or mammography.

Precautions After Breast Augmentation Surgery: The patient may need to stay in the hospital for 1 day after the operation. It is important to use the medications prescribed by the physician after discharge. Resting with the body elevated on a high pillow for the first week is recommended. A special bandage is applied to provide the necessary pressure on the breast. Additionally, drains may be placed to allow for the drainage of any leakage that may occur at the site of the implant placement. If drains are placed, they are typically removed a few days after the operation. Showering is possible 2 days after the operation. Dressings are changed on the 2nd day after the operation, and a wireless bra or sports bra recommended by the physician is started to be worn. This bra should be worn continuously day and night for 2-3 weeks. Swelling, bruising, tension, and discoloration may be observed during the first week after the operation. These symptoms gradually decrease and begin to resolve from the 4th day after the operation. It is recommended to rest during this period. Over time, as swelling decreases, the shape of the breast improves, and a natural appearance is achieved. It may take 4-6 months for the breast to take its final shape. There are no problems related to breastfeeding after breast augmentation surgery since breast tissue is not removed during the procedure, and there is no risk of damage to milk ducts.
